We fully appreciate that not everyone will be familiar with the activities of a clinical neuropsychologist or what is involved in a neuropsychological assessment. To this end, and to help answer some of your questions, we have compiled the following information:
What does a neuropsychological assessment involve?
At Lakes Neuropsychology we offer specialist neuropsychological assessments that involve:
A review of relevant medical records
You may be asked to provide letters and reports that relate to your current problems.
A clinical interview
This involves a conversation between you and the psychologist, where they will ask you questions about what you are struggling with and your background.
A conversation with someone who knows you well
Sometimes it is helpful for the psychologist to speak to someone who knows you well, to get their opinion on your concerns. This will only be done with your consent.
Psychometric tests
These are standardised tests that involve paper and pencil tasks, the answering of questions and the manipulation of objects such as blocks. They can also be computer-based tasks.
Psychological questionnaires
You may be asked to complete a few brief questionnaires about anxiety, depression, trauma and fatigue.
Written report
You will receive a detailed written report from the psychologist at the end of the assessment containing the results of the assessment and treatment recommendations.
Feedback session
At Lakes Neuropsychology, we offer a feedback session where we can discuss the results of the assessment and provide information about what the results show. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and we can discuss treatment options. You are welcome to bring someone with you to your feedback session.
How long does a neuropsychological assessment last?
The clinical interview and psychometric tests will usually take about 3-hours to complete. They can take place over a few sessions if required.
How do I prepare for an assessment?
Sometimes people feel anxious about the assessment, but most people feel more at ease once it has begun and many quite enjoy the process. We can address any questions or worries you have before we begin.
On the day of the assessment, try to be well-rested, bring your glasses if you need them and any hearing aids, and bring a relative or someone who knows you well, if you wish.
What do I get in the end?
You will receive an in-person feedback session and a detailed written report that you can share with your family and/or medical team.
Are you regulated Clinical Psychologists?
Yes. Dr Burns is registered as a Practitioner Psychologists with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Are you on the British Psychological Society (BPS) Specialist Register of Clinical Neuropsychologists?
Yes. Dr Burns is listed on the BPS Specialist Register of Clinical Neuropsychologists (SRCN).
The SRCN is the gold standard for clinicians practising in neuropsychology and provides a quality mark for their expertise.
To join the register, clinicians must undergo specialist post-doctoral training in brain injury and neurological illness and gain experience in neuropsychological assessment and treatment.
To remain on the SRCN, you must undertake supervision and CPD to ensure your knowledge and skills remain up to date.
The SRCN allows the general public, patients and other professionals to identify those individuals who are recognised as Clinical Neuropsychologists by the BPS, the UK’s professional body of psychologists.
